The Winner
When I titled this painting The Winner, I was thinking about more than just survival. I was thinking about the kind of strength that is earned through hardship—the kind that leaves a mark, but never takes away dignity.
This zebra stood before me as a symbol of quiet victory. His body carries the evidence of a life lived fully and dangerously: the scars of lion attacks, the hard-won proof of battles faced and endured. Yet he does not appear defeated. He stands with confidence, with presence, with the unmistakable bearing of one who has come through the fire and remained himself.
That is what moved me most about him. The scars do not diminish his beauty—they define his fortitude. They speak of resilience, of instinct, of the will to keep going even when the odds are unforgiving. In painting him, I wanted to honor that spirit: not just the struggle, but the triumph that follows it.
